Early Life
Jatavia Shakara Johnson aka JT was born on December 3rd, 1992 in Opa-Locka, Miami, Florida. She was the oldest of her mother’s three children and she grew up largely in Carol City and nearby Liberty City, Florida.
Her mother was a drug user, so at the age of five years old Jatavia left her mom to live with her father and his 15 other children. While growing up she spent most of her time on the streets and by middle school she met Caresha Brownlee. After that the two quickly became inseparable.
Career
JT teamed up with her best friend Caresha, who was better known as Yung Miami, and began performing music locally. Around that time, JT was heavily influenced by Miami artist Jacki-O and was a fan of her pre-gospel work. Something that inspired JT to come up with the idea that changed her life.
When JT and Yung Miami entered the music studio for the first time, only JT had ever been in a recording booth before. She spent some time rapping with her father when she was a kid. They released their debut single F*ck D*t Ni*ga in late 2017.
After that, the duo began to sell out packed shows at local venues around Miami. They then upload videos of these gigs to their Instagram and eventually “Coach K” the co-founder of hip hop label Quality Control Music discovered some of these clips and reached out.
Breakthrough
