Jorja Alice Smith was born on June 11th, 1997, in Walsall, West Midlands, England. She was raised by a Jamaican father and a British mother. Music was always been part of her life, her father Peter is a singer who performed with the 2nd Naicha music group.

Her mother Jolene is a jewelry designer who runs her own business. Jorja grew up with her younger brother Luca. At the age of eight, she began taking piano lessons after her father encouraged her. Smith attended Aldridge School, where she studied classical singing and won a scholarship.

She was just 11 years old when Smith began writing songs and later began uploading cover songs and videos of herself on YouTube. At the age of 15, she was scouted by a manager. Upon her high school graduation, Smith moved to London to pursue her music career by the age of 18.


In London, she met Irish singer Maverick Sabre with whom she signed in the year 2015. From that point on she began recording her debut single “Blue Lights” which came out in January 2016.

Smith dropped the song into SoundCloud which wound up amassing over 400k plays in its first month of release. In May of that year, she released a follow-up single “Where Did I Go?” which grabbed the attention of Drake.

It became critical acclaim and led the singer to start a tour in support of the album. She went all across Europe as well as  Japan. Jorja approached Burna Boy to release her single “Be Honest” in August 2019. Jorja dropped her third EP “Be Right Back” in May 2021 which earned her further popularity in the music industry.

Outside of music, she made her first TV show appearance on the American show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in 2018. Smith collaborated with Kali Uchis and headlined the North American tour which began in Washington, D.C. in April 2019.

In 2020 Smith was selected as a host of the BBC Radio 3 show “Tearjerker” which concentrates on the healing strength of the music.
