Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo was born in Manila, Philippines, on February 16th, 2000. He was raised in Leveriza Street, Malate by his parents Mark Andrew Yulo and Angelica Yulo. Carlos grew up alongside one older brother and three younger brothers.
His younger brother Drew also followed in the footsteps of Carlos and became a professional. He had a natural aptitude for gymnastics and began training at Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School. Later he got noticed by the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines which supported him and pushed him to pursue a career in sport.
Additionally, his mother encouraged him to make the move to Japan for his career. In 2016, Yulo got an opportunity to train at the Japan Olympic Association where he began studying literature at Teikyo University in Itabashi. Around that time, he was just 16 years old, so he is been clear about what he wanted from day one.
Career
Carlos Yulo began his gymnastics career in 2018 by participating in the Gymnastics World Cup series. He won multiple medals in Melbourne, Doha, and some other events.
Carlos came to the spotlight with his debut at the 2018 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, becoming the first male South Asian Gymnast to win a medal at the event. He got Bronz in the floor exercise. Since then, he’s won medals at the Southeast Asian Games and added three more Gold to his collection.
Breakthrough
On the 17th of June 2023, Carlos earned his first Gold medal in the floor exercise event, where he led the category with 15.3 points. Yulo comfortably got first place, showing he is “A Cut Above the Rest”.
The following day, he added two more Gold medals to his resume. He topped the men’s Vault finals with a score of 14.299 and again was a comfortable lead as Uzbekistan’s’ Abdulaziz Mirvaliyev finished second with 14.083 points.
Following his breakthrough, Carlos dominated in the parallel bars finals, finishing first place with 15.266 points. The Filipino gymnast not only won three but five medals for the Philippines, because he also bagged Silver and Bronze.

Yulo won his first medal of the season after he came second in the Men’s Individual All-Around event. He made his country proud by contributing five of the country’s total eight medals as well as bringing all three golds.
