Early Life

Carlos Coy was born on October 5th, 1970, in Houston, Texas, to his father Arturo Coy. After spending a handful of years in South East Houston, the family moved to South Park.

He was just three years old when his parents were separated. Since then, Carlos was raised by his sister Sylvia. He often described her sister as “a mother figure” for him. He also has an older brother Arthur Coy Jr.

His father is a former member of the American Marine Corps. His mother was studying in high school when she met Arturo. So she dropped from her school to start her relationship with Arturo Coy.

Education

In terms of school, Carlos attended multiple elementary schools because he often found himself in trouble throughout his childhood. He went to Louie Welch Middle School and then to the Woodson Middle School in Houston.

For high school, Carlos attended Charles H. Milby High School but was expelled from there in 1987. During that time he was in 9th grade. Later he went to San Jacinto College to earn a business associate’s degree, though he failed and dropped his studies.

During his teenage years, Carlos was a crack cocaine dealer but he later stopped it. Before becoming a rapper he had some gigs, including as a salesman and working at a chemical plant. In the early 1990s, Carlos decided to pursue his career as a rapper.

In 1994 South Park Mexican began his music career in the Christian hip-hop genre. Soon he realized that this genre would not work for him, so he changed his style. He adopted the new moniker known as South Park Mexican or SPM and began recording music.

Next year South Park collaborated with his older brother and friend to form the record label called, “Dope House Records.” That same year he dropped his debut studio album, “Hillwood.”

He didn’t gain any recognition until his second album “Hustle Town” came out in 1998. That project became a big hit in the underground rap scene in Houston. “Power Moves: The Table” was his third album, which he released at the end of 1998.

Breakthrough

South Park released his fourth album, “The 3rd Wish: To Rock the World” in November 1999. That album contains a lead single, “High So High” which went viral. The song hit the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart, reaching number 50.

South Park caught the attention of the popular label, “Universal Music Group” with whom he signed a joint venture deal in 2000. South Park took $500 thousand in advance and National distribution. He dropped three more albums under the Universal Music Group.
