Khanyisile Mbau was born on 16 October 1985, in Soweto, South Africa. She was born in a working-class family including her mother Lynette Sisi Mbau, who served at Barclays Bank’s finance branch of the pension budget.

When Mbau was born, her parents were not married and they were only dating. Her father Menzi Mcunu was not much present in her life even her mom Lynette left Mbau to her grandmother when she was just a baby. Since then she was raised by her grandparents.

Career

Mbau developed an interest in showbiz from a young age and she began her acting career in the early 2000s. The turning point of her career came in 2004 when she got the role of Doobsie on the South African television opera “Muvhango” after replacing actress Lindiwe Chibi.

Her performance as Doobsie earned her a lot of fame and led her to become a household name in the industry. However, she was fired from her character the following year due to her outdoor activities.

In 2006, she was selected for the SABC 1 popular drama series “Mzansi”. She got the role of Mbali in its second season. Next year, Mbau was appearing as Zee in “After 9”, a mini-series. From that point on she had guest roles on different TV shows including “Ekasi: Our Stories”, “I Am”, “Like Father Like Son”, and “Reality Check”.

Breakthrough

Mbau had a big break when she began hosting her own talk show called “Katch It With Khanyi”. The show began airing on the eKasi+ and it wound up reaching number 1 in audience share for talk shows.

The first season of the show was enough success, amassing over 1.6 million views in its first week. Later the show’s second season began which received a 2015 South African Film and Television Award nomination.
