Dress code, theme, co-presidents… All the info on the Met Gala 2024

The next Met Gala will be held on 6 May in New York. Here’s everything you need to know about this prestigious event.

The Met Gala is one of the most eagerly awaited fashion events of the year. Every first Monday in May, Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of the American edition of “Vogue”, gathers together hand-picked guests to climb the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in accordance with the evening’s dress code. The event kicks off the Costume Institute’s annual exhibition and helps raise funds to support it.

In 2024, the dress code to follow will be “The Garden of Time”. The theme comes from a science-fiction short story written in 1962 by British author J.G Ballard, set in a flower garden that questions the notion of time. So we can expect an array of flowers on the red carpet. To preside over the evening alongside her, Anna Wintour will be joined by a select group of celebrities, announced this Thursday 15 February in a fun video on Instagram. To act as co-presidents, she has called on rapper Bad Bunny, actor Chris Hemsworth, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and actress Zendaya. This five-star cast will be joined by the evening’s honorary presidents, Jonathan Anderson, artistic director of Loewe, and Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok. One thing is certain: the evening promises to be spectacular.

To accompany the event, the museum’s exhibition will be dedicated to the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. The focus will not be on Disney characters, but on archival garments so delicate that they can never be worn again. More than 250 pieces from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection will be unveiled, including some garments that have never before been presented to the public. These include an English bodice from the 17th century, as well as creations by Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10 May to 2 September.

In the meantime, let’s recall what the stars surprised us with last year.  Last May 1, the Met Gala’ 2023 took place, organised annually by the Costume Institute. Its purpose is to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is one of the world’s largest fashion events, bringing together guests from all areas of art and media.

This time, the evening was dedicated to honouring the memory of the late couturier Karl Lagerfeld. During his lifetime, he worked for various fashion houses (Patou, Balmain, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and, of course, his own), so the stylists of the invited stars had plenty of inspiration. Many celebrities appeared at the gala event in luxurious looks. Our team has selected ten of their favourites and is sharing a little bit of aesthetic pleasure with you.

Honouring the couturier’s contribution to the fashion industry, many stars chose vintage dresses that the maestro once created for the Chanel fashion house. For example, Nicole Kidman delighted us with a pale pink couture dress from 2004, decorated with ostrich feathers and more than three thousand silver crystals. At one time, it was this dress that the actress wore to shoot for the iconic CHANEL No 5 fragrance.

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen’s dress (made of white silk tulle and embroidered with sequin stripes) was the bridal gown at Chanel’s spring 2007 show. The Brazilian wore it for a fashion glossy the same year. In 2023, a luxurious cape decorated with feathers and camellia flower details completed the model’s look. The latter, by the way, is one of the main emblems of the Chanel fashion house.

Naomi Campbell also wore Karl’s creation – a salmon-pink silk dress from Chanel’s spring-summer 2010 collection, inspired by a sari. The fabric was carefully draped over a metallic blouse and crept up the bodice. The column silhouette was accentuated by silver cuffs on the arms and matching earrings.

Margot Robbie was the last ambassador to be personally chosen by the designer. And although her collaboration with the fashion house is over, the actress chose a black dress with a transparent corset by Chanel. By the way, in 1993, supermodel Cindy Crawford wore it on the catwalk.

Floral motifs

Versace’s new it girl Anne Hathaway wore a copy of a Gianni Versace dress to the Met Gala. In 1994, it was worn by Elizabeth Hurley, which created a real sensation due to its frankness (plunging neckline, cutouts fastened with pins). Unlike the original, Anne’s dress was made of tweed (a special material in Chanel’s DNA that immediately brings down the degree of frankness), and the bust was decorated with flowers.

Singer Olivia Rodrigo’s outfit is a graphic reference from Thome Browne to other recognisable Chanel icons, including the black and white palette and rosettes. The dress seemed to be made entirely of threads that were fastened with flowers on the bust. To add a touch of old Hollywood glamour, the singer’s hair was pulled back into a sleek bun with an Audrey Hepburn-style micro-bowl.

Chanel camellias were in trend on the Met Gala red carpet, but Elle Fanning drew attention to another flower. The actress wore a romantic daisy crown to her Vivienne Westwood wedding dress. And it’s not just for show. The couturier photographed young Elle for his book Little Black Jacket. At the time, she was 13 and her head was adorned with a delicate wreath of daisies, and a black jacket was worn over her white dress. This year’s outfit for the Met Gala is a sweet hint of the actress’s first memory of working with Karl Lagerfeld.

Sookie Waterhouse arrived at the party in a vintage Fendi, accompanied by her partner Robert Pattinson, who was dressed in Dior. In her dress, the actress resembled a fairy – the embroidered fabric created the effect of nudity, but without sexual overtones. Her hair easily framed her face, her make-up was expressive but not excessive.

Black and white uniform

American model Camila Morrone appeared in front of the cameras in a black velvet dress with a train by Rodarte. The top of the dress was made of sheer fabric, covered with a voluminous lace collar. Another notable detail is the bow, which is also a recognisable element of Karl’s style.

Emily in Paris star Lily Collins chose a Vera Wang gown, a ball gown that combined black and ivory. The dress was notable for its lingerie-like elements, separate draped sleeves, a front slit and silver “KARL” embroidery on the hem. The ensemble was completed with a retro hairstyle with a side parting.

Nowadays, quiet luxury and old money style are enjoying a new round of popularity. However, the Met Gala is not the place for them. Here you need to stand out. Some people decide to shock, while others carefully consider their outfits, creating perfect looks that match the theme of the evening. We wish each of our readers stylish and appropriate outfits for the occasion to feel confident and in their place.
